BEGINNERS : approx. 0 to 12 weeks
Learn to pick-out, and move to, the Salsa rhythm and start to develop Salsa body-language : pick-up the basic footwork : learn how to hold, and move with, a partner : men learn to give, and ladies learn to follow, a simple lead : learn simple turns, and half-turns : start to use the foundation moves of both Cuban, and New York, styles.
A word of caution and encouragement : Don’t give me ‘two left feet’ stuff! It’s a very dull cop-out line when you’ve heard it a hundred times. Salsa is not easy, especially for non-latinos. It requires patience with yourself and persistence. It took me three sessions just to get the rhythm!

IMPROVERS : approx. 3 to 9 months
Develop simple turn patterns such as ‘changing-places’ and ‘figure of 8’ : become proficient at both Cuban ‘open-out’ and New York ‘cross body lead’ and learn the difference between simple turn patterns in each : men begin to lead with confidence and style, and ladies start to learn the difference between turns, spins, and pivots.
iNTERMEDIATES : approx 9 months to 2 years
Use what you have learnt to start developing combinations and routines : increase the range, and complexity, of moves : men increase their use of turns and spins : ladies start to take on double spins : both start introducing stylistic foot-work variations.
ADVANCED : approx. 2 years +
Learn to dance with sharper, more compact, and more personalised style : take-on tougher routines involving faster moves, often with both partners turning at once : increase use of multiple spins : introduce more complex shines.
