SalsaYork
: Some
Background
SalsaYork
was born Easter 2001. It was York's first Salsa
club, and the sixth child of Mary & Tony Piper.
The other five kids (the real ones) were old enough
to look after themselves, leaving their parents free
to become born-again teenagers.
We hadn't really been out together in nearly twenty
years and were initially at a loss for something to
do. We wanted to do something active....but Mary
dislikes sport and finds the gym boring. We tried
Salsa, early in the new Millennium, and quickly
became addicts. We were soon dancing up to four
times a week and gobbling up different clubs,
workshops, and Salsa 'weekenders' as fast as we
could.
We
got to know just about everybody on the Regional scene,
many on the National scene, and some on the
International scene. The down-side was all the
travelling. Solution? Start a Salsa club!
Mary teaches Spanish at All Saints School and
also on the LFA Programme at York University. Tony
also has a teaching background but, before Salsa,
was running the Door-to-Door Bus Company in York. He
is now committed, full-time, to various aspects of
Salsa promotion and his alter-ego, 'El Caballero'
(replete with hat and boots), is a well know Salsa
DJ across the North of England.
